      The FIRS

The International Forum of Solid Waste - FIRS has established itself as the most important technical and scientific event in Brazil in the theme of solid waste. It presents a broad view of the subject, ranging from academic studies to governmental and business views. Its purpose is to disseminate and deepen knowledge that addresses the causes of the existence of solid waste, thus provoking reflection that will raise awareness of its consequences for the historically - and socially-built relationship between society and nature.

The search for solutions for the adequate management of solid waste has been a challenge, both for the public and private sectors. There is concern especially about the pollution of water resources, but also about understanding the mechanisms of biodegradation of the reject mass and its influence on the behavior of landfills and, by extension, the life of the populations.

Waste deposited in "dumps", in addition to emitting greenhouse gases, as presented in the previous edition of the FIRS, are sources of pollution of groundwater and soil. Waste decomposition may extend for decades after deactivation, increasing the potential for contamination of water resources. After the pollutants are part of the predominant groundwater flow system, they follow the water table until they reach surface waters, producing significant changes in aquatic species and human health.

The ninth edition of FIRS is essential to continue the discussions that started in the previous editions, to disseminate and deepen knowledge about solid waste and to meet the demands of public policies, waste generators, industries, the waste management chain, and environmental technology research and development centers.
